HBA Cares About Oklahoma City

Our hearts went out to the people of Oklahoma City following the devastating tornadoes that leveled parts of their city. After experiencing the Waldo Canyon fire in our own community less than a year before that destroyed 346 homes, we contacted the Oklahoma City HBA staff to see how we could help them navigate the destruction their community following an EF4 tornado. Upon Oklahoma City HBA’s request of immediate needs items, CSHBA members began to help them recover and rebuild.

Our goal was to provide the materials and cash that they needed to begin cleaning up their community and to start rebuilding.

The Central Oklahoma Home Builders Association told us their immediate needs and within hours, we began collecting these items.

1. As families sift through the rubble, they needed something to store and mobilize their belongings. The Central Oklahoma Home Builders Association requested movable storage and carriers (rolling suitcases, rolling totes, backpacks)
2. pet crates – any size
3. Cash. All donations were collected by HBA Cares, our philanthropic division, and sent to the Oklahoma City HBA Foundation for them to distribute to families in need in their community.

A media campaign was launched with all radio and TV stations, along with print media to get the word out.

Thanks to the big hearts and generosity of Colorado Springs, a truck carrying over 130 suitcases, 110 duffel bags (including very large Army type bags), 25 pet carriers, 15 crates/large storage bins, and 5 extra large rolling ice bins, headed out of town for Oklahoma! HBA paid the $1,800 to ship these items to them.

In addition, $2,195 was contributed to HBA Cares, the philanthropic arm of HBA, who sent a check to the Oklahoma City HBA Foundation for them to distribute to families in need in their community.
